How to Find the Best Face Mask for Acne: Your Complete Guide

Are you tired of constantly breaking out and wish there was something that could help improve your breakouts? Are you dreaming of smoother and softer skin with fewer breakouts? You're not alone since 1 in 3 acne visits are of women over 25.

In this article, you'll learn how to find the best face mask for acne and say goodbye to constant breakouts! Read on to discover how to find the perfect face mask and finally help treat your acne.

1. Why Use a Face Mask

You might be wondering why use a face mask? Masks are great and so versatile—whether you're looking to soothe irritated skin, exfoliate the skin, or reduce inflammation, there's a mask for that.

Even when you have your morning and evening routine down, a face mask can always help with oily skin or that pimple that just won't go away.

2. How Often to Use a Mask

If you're going for sheet masks or masks that are just hydrating or soothing, they're safe to use daily. If you're going for a mask with specific results that has exfoliating and active ingredients, you'll want to aim for once to twice a week.

If you use a mask with exfoliating active properties every day, it could cause skin irritation.

3. Finding the Right Mask

When picking out the best face mask for acne-prone skin, you'll want to consider a mask that's charcoal or clay-based. Charcoal and clay-based masks are great because they'll remove excess oil from your skin. Charcoal also takes the dirt out from your pores.

Clay speeds up the healing process of active breakouts since the clay will take out any impurities from the pores. Clay masks will also reduce any surface shine and reduce clogged pores. It's important to note that the pimples won't magically go away, but it'll help aid the healing process.

You'll also want an acne mask that absorbs excess oils, keep your pores from getting clogged, and that takes into account sebum production. You'll want to avoid sheet masks since they can clog pores, and instead go for a peel-off, clay, or charcoal mask.

Peel-off masks remove a layer of dead skin cells and dirt at the surface of your pores. They don't penetrate pores, though, or pull blackheads and dirt out. Avoid homemade peel-off masks since they can cause more harm than good to your skin, especially if they call for using glue or super glue as a base.

Using glue is irritating and damaging to your skin. If you want to go with a peel-off mask, go with one that doesn't have polyvinyl alcohol, which is an irritant for skin.

4. Mask Components

When picking out the right mask, you'll want to look at the ingredients and try to use it at night when you have more time to keep it on.

Look at the ingredients: For the best face masks for acne, you'll want face masks that are anti-inflammatory and exfoliating. Look for ingredients such as salicylic or glycolic acids, tea tree oil, or benzoyl peroxide.

Another great ingredient for acne face masks is chamomile. Chamomile has anti-inflammatory components that will help control your breakouts. If your face mask has seaweed extract, Vitamin B5, or Bisabolol, they're anti-inflammatory and soothe irritated skin.

Kaolin is an ingredient that is a natural mineral which helps purify and cleanse. It also exfoliates while removing dead skin cells for smooth skin.

Try using your mask at night: While you can use your mask at any time of the day, it's best to use it at night since you need time to let the mask stay on your skin for at least 10-20 minutes.

If it's during the flare-up of your acne, you can increase how often you use your calming mask during that time. Remember to do your whole skincare routine prior to applying your mask.

If you go with charcoal, mud, or clay, be sure to wash them off. Avoid moisturizing face masks if your skin is on the oily side.

5. Clay Masks

For clay masks, there isn't one type of clay that fits all. Use Rhassoul clay if you're looking to fight blackheads and whiteheads. It won't strip your skin and is very gentle. It will also get rid of excess oil and give your skin many different minerals.

Bentonite clay, which comes from volcanic ash, is great for oily skin. It's great at absorbing any excess moisture in your skin as well.

If you want to break free of sensitive skin and redness, use Australian pink clay, which is also great at absorbing oil and soothes irritated red skin. Australian pink clay is great for any skin type since it's gentle enough for sensitive skin.

For pore tightening and exfoliation, French green clay should be your go-to. It's great at absorbing oil like other clays. When picking out French green clay, you'll want it to be green in color and never grey or white.
